Skipton - Nelson - Skipton

The famous North Yorkshire market town of Skipton, known as the “Gateway to the Dales “ is your cruise start point here the canal is overlooked by the towns medieval castle and converted mills and is surrounded by a multitude of shops, cafés and a host of public houses each offering a warm welcome to the many thousands of visitors each year.  Its excellent road and rail connections make Skipton an easy to reach boarding and departure point for your holiday.

From Skipton we cruise through the upper Aire Valley surround by crags and fells towards Gargrave the only settlement of any size in this remote tract of land, moveing discreetly in a parallel line with the A65, West Yorkshires link with the Lake District, the old Midland Railways main line to Scotland also shares the valley with the Leeds and Liverpool canal and steam specials are sometimes seen using this route on their way to or from the Settle and Carlisle line. The L and L now starts to twist and turn for about ten miles across the Yorkshire Dales. with wildlife in abundance and unbelievable beauty and scenery in every direction.  We glide past Bank Newton, towards Barnoldswick ( pronounced Barlick by the locals ) there we leave Yorkshire and move painlessly into Lancashire, the border was removed in 1974 from between bridges 149 &150.  The rest of the world owes a large dept of gratitude to Barnoldswick, as it was here at the Rolls Royce factory that Sir Frank Whittle developed the jet engine.  Only a few miles left to our turning point – Nelson, through the Barrowfield locks taking us down 70ft past picturesque Barrowfield Reservoir we start to see tall chimneys, cobbled streets and mills that dominate the sky line take time to admire the wonderful industrial architecture and checkout the local hostelries before we start our return journey to Skipton the next morning, taking the opportunity to stop and visit any of the places we neglected on the outward leg of the cruise.

This cruise is ideal for walkers, nature lovers, anyone interested in industrial architecture or for those who just want to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Dales

Skipton –Saltaire –Skipton

WEEKS 8 / 17 / 24

The famous North Yorkshire market town of Skipton, known as the “Gateway to the Dales “ is your cruise start point, here the canal is overlooked by the towns medieval castle and converted mills and is surrounded by a multitude of shops, cafés and a host of public houses each offering a warm welcome to the many thousands of visitors each year.  Its excellent road and rail connections make Skipton an easy to reach boarding point for your holiday.

We move south as your journey starts along the Aire valley and the canal meanders through Airedales lush scenery rising peaks and ridges topped by moor land and a scattering of old quarry workings. Crossing the boarder between North and West Yorkshire this stretch of lockless Leeds & Liverpool canal continues to throw up one intoxicating view after another, gliding through the villages of Farnhill and Kildwick, separated only by the width of the canal, in fact Kildwicks churchyard has spilled over onto Farnhills bank and is linked appropriately enough by Parsons Bridge.

Sildsden is your first port of call where in bygone days the local Co-op’s barge “Progress” worked hard on the canal fetching and carrying produce vital to the little mill towns economy. Still lockless the L & L continues through Stocksbridge (and Riddlesden south of Keighley) with their substantial deserted warehouses recalling an era when the canal played an effective role in Keighley’s economy – wool and sugar being transported from Liverpool well into the fifties.  Still more beautiful countryside and then Saltaire, but not before encountering one of the Severn Wonders of the Waterways World – the Bingley Five Rise staircase of locks, built in 1774 by John Longbottom the L & L’s chief engineer which changes the level of the canal by 60ft, these locks are the pride and joy of Bingley, attracting thousands of visitors each year.

Saltaire, built by Sir Titus Salt has a mixture of fudge coloured mills, elegant congregational Churches and streets of dignified housing for his workers and all named after the children of Sir Titus, the Town reaches up from the canal like the walls of a great canyon and offers visitors the opportunity to explore and enjoy this wonderful place. Finally we moor at Shipley for the evening.

Then far too quickly its time to return to Skipton but this gives you the chance of a second helping of some of the most intense scenery in the world and just when think you’ve seen it all before something new springs into view making this a completely different journey.

This cruise is ideal for walkers, observing the local Flora & Fawna and of course areas of great beauty and industrial interest or simply relaxing.
